Collage Workshop
For this workshop, we'll be making collages. We'll have supplies and you can also bring your own: maybe you collect ticket stubs, cards, programs ... or have a national geographic collection, maybe you have leftover ribbons or cards or fancy paper you couldn't bear to throw away but haven't figured out what to do with yet... I have created art from grocery lists, my kids artwork, medical textbooks, and the mesh bags citrus fruits are sold in, you name it I have probably considered collaging it.
When I first started making art I always began with a quote or song lyric to get me started, I also found it helped to create pieces with someone in mind, but over time I have been able to get a bit lost in the process in a way that feels both free and very comforting. As doctors many of us are grounded in words and language - much of our job is about processing and explaining things in a very linear way, for me, making art is the opposite and that is what I hope to share...
We can certainly talk about prompts and techniques, but I also invite you to just practice quieting your thinking brain and lean into the process of letting your eyes and hands create something new.
About the Artist
I generally define myself as a doctor-mama-artist-activist, the order changes depending on the context but the threads are always interwoven.
I have been collaging for about 15 years and the mediums have changed over time... my artist statement says: I combine the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life to create a unique visual commentary on family and the world around us and help me process all the contradictions of our lives and work.
